Candlekeep, a centuries old fortress of great knowledge and standing along the Sword Coast of Faerun is where our story begins. The Keep rests upon a high crag overlooking the Sea of Swords to the west. Strong stone walls protect the outer and inner courtyards of the fortress’s books, scrolls, monastic conclave and a few small businesses. Rising towers offer views of the Cloak Wood and the Coast Way trade route to the North, the Wood of the Sharp Teeth to the east… the peaks of the Sunset Mountains far off in the distance. To the south along the road to the region of Amn, rising chimney smoke marks the small farming village of Beregost.
The season is autumn and the sun is high in the sky denoting the time is near for your meeting with the sage Gorion. You find yourself within the walls of an inner courtyard, the renowned Hall of Wisdom towers before you. You are not alone in this courtyard. A few familiar faces, faces you recognize while staying here at Winthrop’s Inn, wait patiently (or not), for something to happen. Could it be the same meeting you are waiting for?
• A half-elf resides within the courtyard.
• A gnome resides within the courtyard.
• A brute of a human with a dark horse resides within the courtyard.
The Keep’s bell tolls the time. Out of the east you see a great grey and white owl descend into the courtyard. Upon the tan hide saddle are two individuals.
• Fragile in appearance but with a presence strong as the wind, a female elf druid cloaked in green holds the reins of her mount.
• Sitting behind her, a blue dragonborn.
The two individuals, obvious adventures like yourselves, dismount and walk towards the staircase of the Hall of Wisdom. Atop the stairs of the Hall, in front of its ornate wooden doors, stands a tall man in scholarly robes. Almost hidden behind him, you notice a hunched figure cloaked in dark fabric. You do not recall if you noticed the entrance of these individuals from the Hall or if they were there all along.
The man raises a hand to scratch his grey beard. He looks around the courtyard, signals for you to gather below and begins to descend the stairs. The dark figure trails cautiously behind, slow and hunched over like an old women.
Ah, my friends. Thank you for meeting me. I appreciate your acceptance of the task to come and assure you that our agreements will be fulfilled.
The Dragon Cultists, an ancient evil you surely know, has returned to the Sword Coast. My friends and allies in the region have confirmed this, though it is still uncertain why the rise in activity after so many years. It is that quest for which your talents shall come to play.
Lesion, a member of this conclave, has conducted research and interviews in the region and believes something big is about to happen in or around Greenest. Unfortunately, Leosin has already slipped away to Greenest despite my advisement to the contrary. I ask that you meet him there.
Virion, I require that you stay here in Candlekeep awhile longer to discuss a plan to engage the regional councils, if need be.
Kellin, I thank you for coming to the call of our mutual friend Leosin. I hope that his early departure is not regrettable and you will connect with him soon. He has spoken positively of you. Your connection to the land and powers to guide and heal will be of great use. Along with a new friend to our region, Ryu, skilled in the ways of the Moon Druids, I have no doubt in joint success to harness all that is around you in your quest.
Kaiden, I welcome the Fanguard Guild to Candlekeep. It has been many years since a guild member has been within these walls. I have confidence in your swordsmanship and sense of duty. You will be instrumental in both the protection and pressing forward of the Sword Coasts interests.
Crispin, glad to see you have safely returned from an expedition to Amn. Let us speak before you go.
And then there is my troubled, Eh-ya. EA has been recently plagued by terrible visions. We do not yet understand these visions, but believe they will become more clear as events unfold in front of her. Yes, EA must experience whatever is to come first-hand and thus, I am sending her with you. EA has skills in magic that will be useful when dealing with the darker arts of the Dragon Cult. She is very dear to me, and very loyal and I trust in you all to keep her safe. You may not become the best of friends, but the Sword Coast calls for us to unite against the forces that stand to harm us.
Lastly, my young ward Imoen will take you to Greenest to meet up with Leosin. She will prepare a wagon for the journey as there is other business, trade and such, to be done in the area. Do keep her out of trouble. I would be quite distraught if something were to happen to her.
With that, I leave it up to you if you wish to leave right away or spend the evening within the walls at Winthrop’s Tavern, free of charge. The road to Greenest is nearly two ten-day, so be prepared.
